The Del Mar Branch of the San Diego County Library, the Del Mar Foundation, and the Salk Institute present: Posters Created by Internationally Known Artist Françoise Gilot for "Symphony at Salk" Concerts 1996-2023. When Françoise Gilot was a 21-year-old art student in Paris, she met Pablo Picasso, who was 40 years older. For the next decade Gilot lived with Picasso and was part of the artists circle of the time including Matisse, Braque and Cocteau. Gilot had two children, Claude and Paloma, with Picasso. In time, Gilot left Picasso and married Luc Simon and had their daughter Aurelia. That marriage dissolved. In 1969 Gilot met Jonas Salk, the developer of the first polio vaccine, who in 1963 commissioned the architect Louis Kahn to design The Salk Institute with instructions to “create a work worthy of a visit by Picasso”. Salk and Gilot were married in 1970—“combining art and science”—a quote from Jonas Salk. Gilot worked in many mediums all her life. Her work is held in many collections including the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. She authored the book “Life With Picasso” about her time with Picasso, first published in 1961and reissued in 2019. Gilot contributed her art works in the form of annual posters created for the Symphony at Salk event from 1996 until her death in 2023 at 101.
